I did my undergrad in UD and noticed that the city was mainly Reds city with little Indians fans. Those who were Indian fans tended to be people transported from Northern Ohio.
However when it came to football there was a large makeup of different football fans that would swing easily based on who was hot.
You are right suggesting that the Browns fans tended to be families who had been there a longer time prior to the birth of the Bengals. If I had to estimate the fan makeup in Dayton tended to stay around:
40-45% Bengals
40-45% Browns
10-15% Steelers
5% other.
Also the city has a large Notre Dame fan base.
