White's Only League
Bill Cunningham approved?...
Whites-Only Basketball League: All-American Basketball Alliance Bans Blacks, Foreigners
Quote:
A whites-only basketball league aims to launch in twelve cities this summer, according to a report in the Augusta Chronicle. The All-American Basketball Alliance would also ban players born outside the United States.
The league's commissioner, Don "Moose" Lewis, claims that he doesn't "hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now." Thus, he says, the All-American Basketball Alliance would be "a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."
The report includes additional shocking quotes from the commissioner:
Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." ...
"Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?" he said. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction."

Wow. Are you serious, Clark?
Will we be seeing protests and demostrations now once this league kicks off? I doubt it, I doubt it will even be worth the attention.
I do understand part of the spirit of what Mr. Lewis is saying. But I also think David Stern has done a good job of addressing those kinds of issues. He has enacted several player rules aimed at cleaning up the image, successfully I think.
Players must be in "dress clothes" whenever at any team function or game if not in uniform.
Unifrom shorts must be above the knee. This one is loosely enforced, but it has prevented the ridiculously long shorts that we see in college basketball. I personally hate those huge shorts; the players might as well just put a skirt on.
Jerseys must be tucked in. If there's a stoppage of play and someone's is untucked, you'll typically see a referee tell him to tuck it in before letting the ball go back into play. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in college basketball the players are allowed to play with their shirts untucked. They're also allowed to wear t-shirts under their jerseys, which is not allowed in the NBA.
So with these things, plus enforcements of fines and suspensions, I think Commissioner Stern and the NBA have already done a good job, and a much better job than the NCAA has, at cleaning the image of basketball.
Besides that, the arguments against the prudence of creating such a league are so many and so obvious, they don't even need to be discussed.

Well, the creation of this league is more than just a place where white men can go play "fundamental basketball." It's part of a growing movement (mainly on the far right) of individuals who freak out because African Americans get their own exclusive cable TV networks, colleges, etc. Some people think the white-American-male gets the shaft.
Be interesting to see how this develops.

(I do know what you're saying, Franny. Forgive me for ignoring that and getting slightly off topic, but really this is not off topic either.)
You want fundamental basketball --> watch the Jerry Sloan coached Utah Jazz.
They're leading the league in assists with 26 per game.
Most people seem to think NCAA basketball is more "fundamentally sound".
The top Div. 1 college team in assists is Sam Houston State with 20.6 per game. Looking at it per regulation minute, the Jazz are at 0.542 assist/minute while Sam Houston St. is at 0.515 assist/minute.
How about an NBA team with more assists than the highest college team?! Ha!
What stat do you want more in "fundamental basketball" than assists?

I would wager money that this will never "develop".
Don "Moose" Lewis is a stupid, stupid person and this "professional" league will never launch. He'll never find enough players interested in associating themselves with this league to field one roster, let alone twelve rosters.
How can someone claim it has nothing to do with race, and include an ethnicity clause in his "professional" league's bylaws? We could all obviously point out a large handful of examples of this retard contradicting himself, but to do so would require us to actually take him and his league seriously, if only for a few moments. I'm gonna just stop right there.
I do not get offended easily, if at all - and this guy comes about as close as anyone has in my life to truly offending me.

heh, they have to issue technicals to teams that do not play "fundamental basketball"
I guess International/Olympic style play would be considered "fundamentally sound" basketball right? Remember when the Allen Iverson lead U.S. team lost all those games and everyone claimed it was because they did not play as a team and didn't play fundamental basketball?

It's true that most basketball players have tatoos. But I bet most football players do too, and we just don't see them because of their uniforms.
I don't want any tatoos on my own self, but I do kinda like the tats those guys get. Except for a few who take it too far, like Chris "Birdman" Andersen. I do like Birdman anyway, though.

Anyone remember the SNL skit with Michael Jordan playing the first black Harlem Globetrotter and everyone booed him for shooting lay-ups? That's what this reminds me of.
This guy just wants attention. There is no way this league ever surfaces. Ridiculous.
