Default Puttin' UC in their place

Columbus writer puts Bearcat Fan in their place. Zing! Link up on Lance's' blog.

Quote:
Quit Whining and Enjoy the Party

It seems that some University of Cincinnati football fans aren't happy.

That's funny. I was born and raised in the Cincinnati area, worked 10 years at the Cincinnati Post, and I never realized there were any UC football fans.

Well, there are now, thanks to first-year coach Brian Kelly.

Kelly has led the the Bearcats to a 9-3 record and a No. 20 ranking, the school's first season in the polls since 1976. UC defeated three Top 25 teams this season and, in a more remarkable achievement, sold-out three home games at Nippert Stadium, where pigeons used to congregate more than humans during the fall.

The Bearcats have a chance to win 10 games in a season for the first time since 1951, and yet some of their fans aren't happy.

I listened to some of those fans call in to the WLW Sportstalk radio show last night, and I had to laugh. They're talking about how the Bearcats deserve to play in a more major bowl than the PapaJohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., where UC will play former Conference USA rival Southern Miss (7-5) on Dec. 22 at Legion Field.

Some UC fans are upset that their Bearcats were passed over for the Sun Bowl, but mostly they don't like the fact that they weren't invited to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, which took Connecticut even though UC beat the Huskies 27-3 on Nov. 10.

Kelly, to his credit, is taking the high road and pointing out that Connecticut finished second and UC third in the Big East Conference. He comes across as a very smart coach who understands the power of PR.

UC fans should be more worried about losing Kelly to higher-profile coaching job -- hello Michigan? -- than being upset about being told to travel to Birmingham instead of Charlotte.

Those UC fans grumbling about their team's bowl berth are infused with the false power of recent success. The Bearcats are 17-8 the past two seasons and are making their second consecutive bowl appearance, sixth in the last eight years, and seventh since 1997.

They're ranting and raving as if they're some type of traditional football power that DESERVES BETTER.

Excuse me? This is UC football, folks. This is a program that has a losing record (523-538-51) since it began playing in 1885, and has been an independent and member of 4 different conferences in the past 60 years.

The Bearcats have won 8 games in a season just 6 times since 1955, and two of those magical marks came in the past couple of years. They have a 253-311-12 record since 1955. UC has had 28 losing seasons since 1955, including a ridiculous 10 in a row from 1983 through 1992. The Bearcats have had 12 different head coaches since 1966.

UC, which hadn't been ranked for 31 years until this season, deserves better? Based on history, who are the Bearcats to demand anything? They once went 47 consecutive seasons without playing in a bowl game and now some of their fans are griping about which bowl they're going to play in?

Puh-leeeeeze, people.

As coaches say, "Know your role."

UC has been a great story all year. Kelly is a super coach. By joining the Big East in 2005, the Bearcats have put themselves in a position where they can be in the national championship race on an annual basis. The program, dormant most of the past few decades, has a bright future.

Can't people enjoy success without whining?

Damn.

I think he's wrong for bringing up history here as it relates to this season. Before this year - what the hell has Mizzou ever accomplished? yet they are potentially headed for a national title game appearance.

If you want to blame history for Meineke "snubbing" the Bearcats, blame the history of the fan support. No Support = No $$$ = No Meineke Muffler Bowl. Plus that loss to Pitt doesn't help either

If UC folks can demonstrate that they can travel this season, they will be rewarded next season.

UConn is THE STATE UNIVERSITY of Connecticut. History and numbers demonstrate that the Huskies do follow their athletic programs en masse across the country (i.e Basketball Men's and Women's).

Can understand the outrage, but the bowls need to make money for their sponsors. Empty seats don't pay the bills.

Hopefully, this outrage may be a good thing....we shall see.

You want to talk history of football programs. We have at least been Div. 1-A through our entire history. S. Florida didn't play football until 10 years ago and UConn was 1-AA until about five years ago. That argument doesn't hold much water in my book. I do understand his point, but history of UC football is not why those other two schools got picked over UC.

He's not saying history is why UC lost out. He's saying quit your bitchin' and enjoy the fact that you are going to a bowl. What he says about history is that the fans appear to think UC is USC, Oklahoma, OSU, UM etc. when if you look at the history of the program they are clearly not on the same plain.

And history has nothing to do with Mizzou having a title shot. Its the fact they've played good ball after an early loss and being in the conference they are they may be afforded that shot if they can beat OU tonight.

Remember in the BCS its not who you lose to it's when you lose and what you do after it.

Wow, Ohio State fans are insecure. (oh I am sorry, THE Ohio State, which shows a level of arrogance and insecurity on its own but I digress) They are not happy with the fact that their team surpassed expectations and played well. Ever since OSU were made fools of in last years BCS title game OSU fans have attempted to hide their wounded pride by pointing the faults of other programs and proclaiming they have all the answers.

Listen dude, tOSU fans living in Cincy have had to deal with the Gator Chomps and misc mocks from UC people since fucking last year (we get it - little brother syndrome). UC fan hates tOSU, for reasons unknown. The bottom line is - you pissed a lot of people off. Good people who are just passionate about their team. Those who used to support UC (like me) have gotten sick and tired of that shit. The Conference Wars got us all fired up, and I think a lot of tOSU fans are justified in their UC blasts. 37-7.

Go Pitt.

And OSU fans are innocent? For years OSU fans have loved to mock other teams such as UC and their passionate fans. There has been a growing anger toward OSU fans at many schools due to actions by OSU students. (However, I will concede some of it is also envy of a dominate OSU team) So when OSU fans tell UC fans to know their role/place they are building upon prior anger within UC fans. The underlying arrogance of know thy place is huge and you wonder why UC fans are quick dislike OSU.

Are you from Mars? OSU fans don't give a rat's ass about UC football or their fans, whereas UC people are obsessed with tOSU bashing and Big Ten bashing. In Columbus, UC is the same as Akron or Toledo. Just another Ohio school. And when has UC ever had passionate fans? You sold 2800 tickets to the last 5 bowl games combined.

Gee, I wonder why there's a big pissing match. We bring up a valid point ("We're getting shafted") and we're told to shut up, enjoy ANY bowl, and "know your role."

I wonder why that riles UC fans up.

I have to agree with the UC guys on this one. Franny and osujp are probably trying to stir up some shit with this stuff, but just who started this thread?

It gives the appearance that tOSU fan is obsessed with Bearcat fans.

I still think UC was jobbed on the bowl but I hope they win by 40 points against Southern Miss.

The fact of the matter is, this shouldn't be an OSU vs. UC thing. The teams didn't play. UC is going down to Alabama and getting free garlic sauce. tOSU is/may be going to what's left of New Orleans and seeing naked women on Bourbon Street. Seems fair to me.

I do support UC, but c'mon man - you have to admit - UC people LOVE it when tOSU goes down. They absolutely love it. Sure UC deserves a better bowl, but no one outside this city really cares about UC's gripes. Lance and people of his ilk need to realize this. If Kelly stays for 3 or 4 more years I think you could see a UC team getting that Meineke Bid, or better. But having said that - I do agree with OSUJP - next year will be a big test. Hopefully Mauk stays, I haven't seen enough high definition close ups of his surgically repaired arm.

I think UC should be happy with what they got. The football program hasn't been historically great and they have only been to what, 4 or 5 bowls games in their history? Maybe? I don't know.

It's just that I think that UC has very little room to complain. Be happy with what has been given to you. Have a few more great seasons, win a few more bowl games, and then complain about your lot in BCS life.

It's great to want more, but the desire of the fans right now just seems like whining. Better the pizza bowl than no bowl at all, right?

Just so you know, I went to Kent. The only way my team goes to a bowl game is if they buy a ticket. I would not be complaining if the Flashes went to the pizza bowl.
