Default The Future

Watching the young guys tonight I was thinking about Yancy Gates coming. Carl Kremer called him a "genetic freak" the other night and said he's the best talent he and his staff has ever seen. He qualified that by dropping name after name of guys they've faced over the years at Moeller. He said they had three guys hanging on every piece of Yancy they could get a handle on, and Yancy still slammed it down. The future is bright!

A freshmen we haven't seen, Cronin on Darnell Wilks “Darnell is a guy I always felt needed time to develop,” Cronin said. “He was a guy that had great athleticism but he was going to have to transition into a perimeter player. The key with him is to make sure he continues to work on his skill level. Darnell’s biggest transition is learning how to be a perimeter player,” said UC coach Mick Cronin. “He’s not strong enough right now to play on the interior in the Big East.
“He’s a guy that I wish I could give more playing time, but we’re playing more guys probably than anybody in the Big East right now so he’s kind of caught in a numbers crunch. But I haven’t changed my optimism about his potential.”

I've read that they could even consider redshirting Wilks his sophomore year, in a pretty rare move. Too late to redshirt him this year.

They should've redshirted him this year. Cronin assumed this would be a rough year and that he could get some playing time and be that much better for next year. I understand the thought, but with every game being so close in the Big East he hasn't seen the court in a while. I would've liked to have seen him at least a few minutes last night. Once the game got under five minutes, Cronin could've put him out there. I guess he wasn't taking the victory for granted and I don't blame him for it. I hope Yancey comes in and has an impact similar to Beasley at K-State. Obviously he's not quite the talent Beasley is, but I would like him to make a big impact. From the little bit I saw of him, he doesn't play with much passion or desire. If that's true that will be a problem.
