Default Taveras happy to play for Baker

Willy Taveras didn't have a spectacular season in 2008 with the Colorado Rockies, hitting only .251 with an on-base average of .308.

Default Taveras: No power, plenty of speed

Willy Taveras will give the Cincinnati Reds plenty of speed and solid defense in center field. But can he hit? Here's how he's done so far in the big leagues:

That OBA is weak. This makes it sound like we resigned Corey Patterson. Well, not that bad.

His numbers last year were down, but his overall numbers over four years are solid. He doesn't strike out every other at-bat which is what I like. He's a get on-base mentality type of guy with blazing speed. Perfect for the top of the order. Being his fifth year in the league this is the time he needs to round into shape. He needs to get his average up for sure. He played in the NL West which has a lot of pitchers parks so that could be a reason for a poor average. And Coors Field with the humidor is no longer a hitters park either. We'll see how he fares in a hitters park. I like the signing. You got to give guys like this a chance. Anyone who thinks the Reds will sign any big names in free agency is completely kidding themselves. They can't compete with the high $ teams for above average talent. Bring a guy like this in and see if he gels with this team and this park. This signing might mean they are giving up on re-signing Hairston. Or at least moving on with different plans in case they don't re-sign him.
