OJ Mayo Suspended 180 Days!!!!!!!
Seriously...who gets suspended from HIGH SCHOOL for 180 days? How is that even possible? It's called explusion, NCH. Look it up.
I've predicted for the past year or so that Mayo will never play a college basketball game in his life. He's starting to make me want to lay money on it, now.

OJ Mayo Suspended For 180 Days
LAST UPDATE: 4/24/2006 9:49:48 PM
A star basketball player is suspended from school.
We broke the story about OJ Mayo for you Monday on Local 12 Live at 6:00.
A North College Hill school board member tells us Mayo is suspended for the next 180 days, because of an altercation with a female student last week.
Mayo is considered one of the best high school basketball players in the country.

Wonder if he can go to the NBA development league while he is expelled. Any more details available on this?

I find it a little unusual that the Enquirer, WCPO.com, and WLWT.com have nothing on this as far as I can tell. Maybe it's not "officially" official yet, and WKRC just wanted to break the story or something.
From what I've read, the NBA D-League has an age limit of 18 years, and I'm not sure about any kind of educational requirements. You'd think they would require a high school diploma or GED at the very least, no? I'm pretty sure OJ is 18 though. Maybe this suspension explains the reports that OJ was visiting Oak Hill Academy's campus last weekend.
Even though the NBA implemented their new age limit, they can't prevent some shoe company from signing these kids at the age of 18 and showering them with millions out of high school. Yeah it would be risky, but with the right kid, they could probably build a marketing campaign around "He's coming..." advertisements and stuff while he spends a year practicing, or playing in the D-League or overseas or something.
And what's with 180 days? I don't think such a punishment exists at most high schools, correct me if I'm wrong (I know there is at least 1 teacher that posts on here, right?) Is this "preferential treatment" if you wanna call it that? Would a non-celebrity be given this punishment instead of an expulsion? Obviously if he did something worthy of 180 days out of school, it's pretty serious...

I too am a little skeptical of making comments on this story just yet. You have some random, short news report from Channel 12 and that is it. BUT Channel 12 is not Deadspin, it's not Cincinnati Sports Dot Com- it's a pretty reliable source. I have checked many sources and no one is reporting this story. Strange.
I will wait until I collect more info today to share some opinions. I am perplexed by the 180 day punishment as well though. I was never suspended in high school but I always thought there was like 1 week, 2 week and then expulsion. J-Mart? Can you help us out?

As of 12:59PM EST today I only have 1 story coming through the wire on this:
http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/...042506aaf.html
Essentially all this does is reference the WKRC report.

It's confirmed.... he choked a girl:
New Woes For Mayo
LAST UPDATE: 4/25/2006
It appears that OJ Mayo's imminent transfer from North College Hill to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia may be on hold following Mayo's suspension for allegedly assaulting a female student last week. Local 12 was the first to tell you about the suspension Monday night after a board member confirmed the choking incident at North College Hill.
Mayo is the 2-time Ohio Mr. Basketball leading the Trojans to back to back state titles. He's considered the top junior basketball prospect in the country. Officials at Oak Hill confirm they have talked to Mayo about the transfer, but that was before his suspension and that his recent altercation could have an impact on whether he would be accepted into Oak Hill. NCH officials won't comment on a student issue.

This is such a horrible story, I don't even know how to make any sort of comments on the front page blog. It's easy to say "What an idiot" but obviously this guy is worse than an idiot. He needs help. This is like Maurice Clarett type stuff.

Ok, so I don't know if this is a Sycamore rule or an Ohio rule, but here's how it works for us - you can only be suspended up to 10 days in a row. More than that is expulsion. Doesn't mean you can't be suspended for 3, then 4 more for something else, then 3 more again, then again for a fourth time...although if you're getting suspended that much, they typically will have an expulsion hearing anyway.
I have no idea how this 180 day thing works. I think that is an expulsion, because there are only 180 days in a school year. Most times when you're expelled you have the opportunity to apply for readmittance after a year.

Europe was fantastic, especially Italy. Firenza was amazing, Assissi was beautiful, and basically when I go back to Europe again, it will be to the Toscano and Umbria regions. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Paris, and slightly disappointed with Rome.

That is pretty amazing. Be funny if that was still #1 by the time he goes to college and all the real national buzz starts.
