Default Romney

Should the fact Romney is a Morman be any more of an issue than the church of choice by any of the others?

Mormons don't have a perfect reputation in this country. I don't think the general public wants a Mormon president. Do we really need those beliefs trickling down? I don't want to live in China.

That is why we have separation of church and state. While he may yield the power to change that, getting it changed, with the wonderful state of gridlock we have with the idiots at the congressional and senate level, would take decades to get done.

In response to non perfect reputation in this country...well the ol catholics with "Father Boneakid" don't exactly rate real high on the list either....hell politicians in general are fucking joke if you get down to it.

I'd be more concerned with his gestational periods...i.e., every 8 years or so he metamorphs himself depending on what he is running for and where he is running at. Pro-choice while running for Governor of Massachusettes, now pro-life. Supported universal health care when running for the Senate in Mass. in the '90's, now very anti-governmental sponsored health care.

With all the checks and balances in the office I think the Morman thing is a non issue.

A bigger issue iis the people like Sharpton, Jackson, Pat Robertson and Frank Page who sell their members or followers to the highest bidders and hide behind the guise of religion and their non profit church. If they want to "sell" their membership to anyone take away their tax exempt standing. Make them pay taxes just like any other company.

If a minister tells his people from the pulpit to vote for a certain candidate take away the tax exempt status of that church.

Agree, HTR, but it's not difficult for the lay members of any church to create a "volunteer" organization thay "technically" does not speak for or is not directly affiliated with a church to do just that.

I am Lutheran and our church in 2004 made a huge effort to pass the Ohio "Marriage Protection Act", (i.e., banning civil unions & same sex marriage). Nothing was ever said by the church, but you were besieged in the parking lot to sign petitions. I am still on many of our members "shit-lists" for declining to sign it, and answering as to why not by saying that I would change my mind if they included divorce, living together before marriage and having children outside of marriage as additional events that needed "constitutional protection" just as much as two private, law-abiding people of the same sex who simply wanted things such as family insurance, survivor rights and legal protections.

I know it is hard to track but I also know of several churches here in town that their pastors have told them in their services that if they don't vote for so and so they are not true believers or true to your faith.

Politics should have no place at church no matter your persuasion. My wife and I left our last church because of this. They should stick to the readings and books of their religion.

I'll tread lightly in my response as my overall views about religion are pretty critical, but....

If I were in the position that I could not find a single candidate to vote for, but had to vote (as I do not believe in not voting) I would probably vote for Romney. Those in religious power seem to have an air of entitlement over our lives. Seeing someone who is in the religious minority take power would be a nice change of pace, as (I am guessing here) he wouldn't kowtow to the Christian right.

Tedesco, you may be correct in that Romney would be independent, but he also might well have had to figuratively "sold his soul" to the religious right in order to ever get there. I'm a Democrat, but if I found a moderate Republican that caught my interest I'd easily vote for him or her.

I'd be surprised to find a politician who didn't sell out in some way to achieve his position.

It is a shame but that would be almost impossible.

A good story about ministers. I helped build a church in MT Healthy. At got to the point every time I got into a long conversation the subject of a donation would come up . Finally, I was asked twice to give a pretty big donation to a certain officials election because he " would be the best for our church." Needless to say I don't go there any longer. And this is the church where my two daughters were married.
