Default White Guilt

Just to be provocative...

I wonder how many voters are actually interested in the ideas of our candidates anymore. My grandmother for example says she really likes Obama. Why? Because he "speaks well" and seems pleasant. I'd like to think that she's not representative of anything more than the crazy old lady contigency, but I'm afraid a lot of people don't think these candidates through any more than she does. Does she realize he's basically a full-on socialist? I have no clue.

I suspect that she, and many other people will relish the opportunity to vote for Obama because of "white guilt". A lot of Americans would like to be able to say that they voted for a black guy as if it's proof that they aren't or couldn't be racist. What a great, multi-cultural, special place America is! We elected a black dude President! I personally, don't care what friggin' color the president is as long as he knows what the hell he's doing. Barack Hussein Obama does not qualify.

Is anyone else with me on Obama's "white guilt" bounce? Would any of you feel warm and fuzzy about voting for a black dude, just because he's black?

Unfortunately the line of thought from your grandmother is the same line of thought from the twentysomething crowd that....sorry here folks...but just don't have a damn clue.....about anything. I would even push that envelope into the early 30 something crowd too.

I don't pay attention to the color of a man's skin. This isn't 1962.

Obama appears to be the most charismatic candidate and certainly is the most "presidential" out of the lot. Maybe that just means he presents himself well and speaks well, but these are qualities a leader should have. I don't think Obama is a socialist, but I do think he's a little too liberal for my tastes. Having said that, people want a change SO bad right now - he's in the driver's seat to win this thing and make you a very very unhappy camper.

I'll take Obama against the field, because the field is shitty.

McCain is going to be 72 before the election! 72!! Doesn't this concern ANYONE? Hillary looks 72

So, if you're not in favor of:

Candidate A.
Candidate B.
Candidate C.

You're either

Ageist
Sexist
Racist

Interesting dilemma.

liberal=socialist. Obama is the biggest socialist in Congress.

WHAT is the "change" Obama brings? His socialist views are more of what's wrong. That's not change. That's going faster down the wrong path.

obama as president is one of the most alarming scenarios i can think of in recent times. i have been in a debate recently with two diehard obama followers, and when i press for a from-the-gut (or memory) list of O's top 3 initiatives as president, i am either given vague language that means nothing (hope, change, etc.), or forwarded links to O's site.

the one thing i can't get ANYONE to tell me is: whom are the rich or "wealthy"? some of O's plans claim to be to help small business owners, but i don't think there's a small business owner out there that doesn't want to make money. at what point am i both a small business owner and the evil "rich"?

O also has A LOT of social programs and plans for college students, health care, the elderly, small business owners, and "big" corporations. this is not a good man. this is a socialist. 100% socialist.

i'm 31 yrs old, and i literally care more about my grocery list than a person's skin color. on my block my wife and i are the minority race, and this bothers some Boomer family members we have. i would argue that the skin color factor is more of a thing for those 50+ in age.

With a lot of the 50+ it is not the color of the skin. It is the excuses made because of the color of the skin. And that means all skin colors.

I think the problem with the younger people is they really don't know that it was like before intergration. The onlly things they know are what they have heard or read.

You know... I'm not really worried about young people (college age) and what they think because they don't vote. Everyone always thinks they will, but they never do. Everyone was sure they were going to come out for Kerry and they just didn't. Diddy can wear his "Vote or Die" shirt every day for a year and it won't matter. They're more interested in who's going to win Randy Jackson's America's Best Dance Crew than they are the Presidential election.

By the way... Have you actually watched an Obama speech Franny? In its entirety? I did this past week because I was on visiting my in-laws and my father-in-law watches MSNBC all day long. During the speech that I watched he basically gave a shout out to a favorite Chicago neighborhood by bellowing out "South Side!" with the kind of inflection Tupac used when he would yell "West Side!".

It was probably the most unpresidential thing I've heard come out of a candidate's mouth thus far. I felt silly for him. If that's his style he should record a commercial for Tha Hard Ta Knock shop next time he swings through town.

None of the candidates look all that promising right now. I won't really start paying attention until party candidates are confirmed.

Wilbon does it every other day, and he acts whiter than Obama. What the hell is wrong with saying South Side with a little pizzazz?
