Better Know A Prospect: The Fightin' Tyler!

Cincinnati Sports is taking a look at some of the players in the NFL Draft during our Better Know A Prospect series.

The 2006 season is officially over, so why waste time in the past? Let's get started on the next year. Who should we start with? How about a guy who's name might be called when the Bengals are on the clock.

Before the Senior Bowl, NFL Draft Countdown's mock draft said we might see: DEMARCUS TYLER, DT from North Carolina St.

More often than not you have some major questions about a prospect when he really doesn't emerge until his senior year but "Tank" actually has a legitimate excuse. You see prior to 2006 he played alongside not one, not two but three guys who were first round picks in the 2006 NFL Draft (Mario Williams, Manny Lawson, John McCargo) and it really speaks volumes that he had his best season without the benefit of being surrounded by all of that pro talent. Perhaps no player boosted his draft stock as much as Tyler did last year
There's the "C" Word Again: What's the kid's character like? According to his DraftTracker Playing Card, Tyler brgins some baggage with him both on and off the field. "He was arrested in 2005 for assaulting a police officer in a Raleigh, NC nightclub and he was ejected from the Southern Miss game in 2006 for "spitting". Also some concerns regarding mental capacity after poor score on Wonderlic Test (13)." Sounds like a perfect candidate for the 2006 team. Will 2007 be different?

Woody's Take: Drafting a guy named "Tank" sounds like a great idea or a bad idea. I personally thought last year's NC State defensive linemen class was overrated. But if he did better without those guys around him, maybe he's got what it takes to play in the NFL. I honestly don't see Marvin Lewis taking a DT in the first round. He hasn't reached for that position before the fourth round before and it wouldn't surprise me if that trend continued.
