Hey, did you know that it's March Madness time? You might have heard that somewhere. Perhaps even in your own office. You may have already filled out a bracket or two. There's a growing number of rules and decorum that need to be established in regards to this kind subgenre. The big one that gets talked about is the number of brackets you get to fill out. It's easy to say you picked all the upsets when you wrote out 35 different possibilities. But I think we've pretty much established than any more than a couple unique brackets deems you worthy of ostracization. The other subject I think needs to be cleared up is how much love do you have to show your team. It doesn't get talked about much, although it was brought up on Mike & Mike in the Morning today, but I'd like to get some rules set.

If your school is in the NCAA Tournament, do you owe it to them to pick them to win a certain number of games? If you're an Ohio State fan, is it sacriligious if you don't have your Buckeyes in the Final Four? Or winning it all? If you're a mid-major, are you required to pick your team to upset the favorite? You need to put your money where your mouth is and pick them to win at least one game as long as they're not going up against a 1 or 2 seed. After all, showing love should not cost you the chance at the office pool. If you're a national championship contender like OSU, anything less than the Elite Eight is an disgrace and you need to forfeit your Buckeye stickers. Sound fair? For the teams in between, the 3-10 seed range, it gets a little murkier.

During UC's hey-day, I used to get a lot of crap for predicting Cincinnati would win the first game and lose the second one. More often than not, they were seeded to do better than that. But this team, under Bob Huggins, was notorious for "one and done" performances in the Big Dance. So, I made my brackets reflect that. Of course, those who gave me a hard time were Murray State grads who wouldn't even pick their team to win one game so what the hell do they know?
